This 24-hour course is designed to train the student in the skills required for certification in Hazardous Materials Response to the Awareness & Operations Level. Skills for this program of instruction are drawn out of the competencies in Chapters 4 & 5 of NFPA 472, 2013 Ed., which is the NFPA Standard for Hazardous Materials Response. Students will receive instruction on the fundamentals of hazardous materials identification, isolation, and response in both classroom and practical settings, including scenario-based instruction. This course does not cover any of the Mission Specific competencies found in chapter 6.

- Planning and implementing a planned response
- PPE & Decon familiarization
Students that successfully complete the program of instruction and pass a written and hands-on skills evaluation will receive national certification through The National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) in Awareness, Operations (core).
There are no prerequisite requirements for this program of instruction.
Textbooks required for class will be checked out to the student the first day of class and will be returned prior to receiving their certificate. Textbooks can be purchased with advanced notice.
Students are required to provide and wear a helmet, gloves and eye protection during the hands-on portions of the course. Sturdy footwear is also recommended as many of the evolutions are conducted in an outdoor environment. All classes will be held regardless of weather conditions, foul weather gear is the student’s responsibility.
